A surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital Eric Borgestein has separated conjoined male twins after a successful operation.
The operation to separate the four months and two weeks old twins from Balaka district, was done on Wednesday.
They were operated at the Mercy James Foundation which was constructed by American Pop Star Madonna at the hospital premises.
The hospital administrator Themba Mhango tells said that the operation which is the second in Malawi was a success.

Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) every month registers at least six cases of teenagers having their uteri removed after developing various complications which include unsafe abortions.
A uterus is a hollow, pear-shaped organ that is located in a woman’s lower abdomen, between the bladder and the rectum. This is where a baby grows after conception until birth.
Malawi News has learnt that out of the 900 to 1,200 births the hospital registers, 30 percent are of women who are below the age of 20.
According to one of the gynaecologists at QECH, Louis Gadama, every month, the hospital records 20 cases of women who have severe sepsis an infection which requires having their uteri removed.
“This is the only way to save the lives of the women. Previously, we lost a lot of women to such infections[sepsis] because people were reluctant to have a hysterectomy but the women need to be saved…These are women of different ages but 30 percent of them are teenagers,” he said.
Gadama revealed that in one day, QECH attends to 10 to 15 spontaneous miscarriage cases most of which involve teenagers.
“Most of them [teenagers] do not even tell us that they have had unsafe abortion. We only get to learn about it after examination… sometimes we find objects in the womb,” he said.
The gynaecologist added: “There is a strong need for teenagers to be encouraged to delay pregnancy and be allowed to use contraceptives. There is also need for more awareness on child marriages because some of these teenagers are married already.”
The Malawi Demographic and Health Survey (MDHS) of 2015/16 indicates that Malawi has recorded an increase in teenage pregnancies from 26 percent (in MDHS of 2010) to 29 percent.
“Nineteen percent of women aged 25-49 have first sex before age 15, and 64 percent before age 18. By age 20, 85 percent of women have had sexual intercourse…Thus women in Malawi may be exposed to the risk of pregnancy and begin child bearing at an even earlier age…” reads part of the MDHS.
National Coordinator for White Ribbon Alliance, Nancy Kamwendo confirmed that teenage pregnancies is a huge problem that the country is facing, attributing it to lack of information and access to contraceptives.
“Teenagers lack access to contraceptives due to stigma. Parents and the society at large do not seem to accept that they also need contraceptives,” she said.
Kamwendo noted that there is a provision of Youth Friendly Health Services (YFHS) but it is not active in most health facilities, leaving the teens with nowhere to go to access information and contraceptives.
“We all have a role to play otherwise this might worsen. Teenagers are resorting to having unsafe abortions because they are not ready for the pregnancies in the first place. There is need to prevent these pregnancies
“I know there are a lot of myths about this which including that contraceptives might promote immorality, but this is not true. Adolescents need to know what to do other than risk their lives through abortions or even ending up having their uteri removed,” she said.
Ministry of Health spokesperson, Joshua Malango said youths who are sexually active can access condoms to protect themselves from sexually transmitted infections, HIV and pregnancy.
“You might wish to know that reducing teenage pregnancies is not only the responsibility of the ministry, everybody [including parents, chiefs, communities, politicians, faith based organisations, media and the youth themselves] need to play their part too,” he said.
Malango further said a number of ministries came together to develop the National Strategy for Adolescent Girls and Young Women which has been finalised.
He then confirmed that the ministry (through its health facilities) provides post abortion care since termination of pregnancy is illegal in Malawi.
Findings of United States based Guttmacher Institute and University of Malawi’s College of Medicine Centre for Reproductive Health indicate that 141,000 abortions occurred in Malawi in 2015—at an annual rate of 38 abortions per 1,000 women of reproductive age.
“All of which indicate that abortion is common in the country. The majority of these procedures were performed under clandestine and unsafe conditions and often resulted in complications,” reads part of the findings.
The 2014 findings of Benefits of Meeting the Contraceptive Needs of Malawian Women conducted by Centre for Social Research and Guttmacher Institute indicate that there is need for more investment in contraceptives.
“Compared with current expenditures on contraceptive services and maternal, new born and post abortion care, meeting just half of the unmet need for modern contraceptives would result in a net saving of K2 billion ($5.5 million),” reads part of the findings, adding that fulfilling all unmet needs would save K4.1 billion ($11.0 million).

National Malaria Control Programme has said the countrywide door-to-door distribution of Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) begins in September this year (2018).
Chairperson of the Programme’s Task force, Happy Kondowe, disclosed this in Nkhotakota this week during training of the District Task Force on how they should prepare themselves for the exercise.
Kondowe explained that the distribution exercise, which is aimed at protecting the population from Malaria which is killing many people in the country, will take place in phases in the three regions of the country.
“It will start in September in the South, October in the Central and November in the Northern Region. We urge the District Task Force to help us use the community structures to reach out to every household so that they register in readiness for the distribution.
“This activity will be unique because it will follow the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendation of one net per two people as opposed to previous mosquito net distribution exercises that followed the sleeping space system,” he said.
“Everybody and every household have to be considered despite having a mosquito net or not because this exercise assumes that no one has a net. For those who have the nets available, then let that be their advantage,” said Kondowe.
According to Kondowe, over 10 million nets will be provided to the population of over 17 million people.
He added that two million of the nets will be piperonyl butoxide (PBO) while the rest will be standard. PBO nets are those that have extra treatment for the stubborn mosquitoes.
Lives of women and babies are at risk at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital’s (Qech’s) Gogo Chatinkha Maternity Wing because of over-crowding as pregnant women scramble for services, a situation made worse by a temporary closure of Limbe Health Centre.
In Lilongwe, at Kamuzu Central Hospital, people are having to pay K2,000 to have their patients carried upstairs to wards because an elevator is not working.
Margaret Chirwa from Lilongwe said she paid some guards to carry her husband to the male ward at KCH.
“I only had K2,000 and I was compelled to pay that K2,000 as I didn’t have the energy to carry my husband upwards,” Chirwa said.
One of the guards that we talked to admitted to be in the business of carrying patients and dead bodies to and from the wards and to the mortuaries.
“All I am doing is to ease the burden that has been created by the non-functional hospital elevators and I cannot do that for free. I need at least K2,000 for the services because I have to buy anti-germs soap to clean myself after everything,” the guard said.
Qech is also struggling to treat pregnant women and babies, as there is a lot of delay to attend to emergency situations such as Caesarean Sections since its operating theatre is ever full and medical supplies are not enough.
Due to the delays, babies are either born dead (stillborn) or die in the nursery after sometime or suffer permanent brain damage which is discovered later in life. The theatre is ever busy that there is no much time to sterilise equipment and this is putting women and new born babies at risk of infections (Sepsis).
One out of every 37 children in Malawi dies in the first month of life and 80 percent of these deaths are due to prematurity, complications during birth or infections such as pneumonia and sepsis, reads part of a report by the United Nations Childrens’ Fund (Unicef) titled Every Child Alive released early this year.
Due to the congestion at Qech, the facility’s 24- bed labour ward is not enough to accommodate the women in need. It has been noted that other patients are sleeping on the floor. The last few weeks, the corridors were closed and acted like a full ward.
Out of the three theatres at this wing, only one is operating against a daily average of 10 emergency situations. This has led to high rates of stillbirths and neonatal deaths.
Health workers assigned to this ward, who we have spoken to indicate that they are overwhelmed and at the same time frustrated with the system because patients are not assisted accordingly due to lack of essential medical supplies and equipment.
The congestion is also threatening lives of women with gynaecological issues and cervical cancer who also need to undergo an operation (elective procedures). They have been put on the waiting list and it is not known when they will be attended to. The facility is also hit by shortage of anaesthetists.
Malawijournalnews, has learnt that much as the ward is always having this pressure, this situation has been perpetuated by the closure of Limbe Health Centre’s maternity wing which is under renovation. The health facility delivers 10 to 15 babies per day.
District Health Officer (DHO) for Blantyre Dr. Gift Kawalazira confirmed that the closure of Limbe Health Centre’s maternity wing early this month has had a great impact on QECH.
“We opened an extra maternity wing at Bangwe Health Centre but the women don’t want to go there. They don’t want to walk to the facility because it’s not easily accessible. But we are concerned with the congestion that this is causing at Qech,” he said, adding that Limbe Health Centre may be opened at the end of this week.
The DHO said the women are not restricted to go to Bangwe but they may also go to other primary health facilities: “this is also becoming a cost on us as we now have a standby ambulance at Qech, which is taking some women to Bangwe.”
Ministry of Health and Population spokesperson, Joshua Malango, said the government noticed that the elevator had outlived its lifespan and already released K120 million for the procurement of the new elevator.
Malango said the process of procuring the new elevator has been finalised and what remains is for it to be moved from China to Malawi, a process that may take weeks.
“But in the meantime, we have employed some porters to be carrying the patients. These porters are paid by government and not any other guardian. Guardians are not required to pay the porters,” Malango said.
Malawi’s maternal mortality is at 439 per every 100,000 live births. Neonatal mortality is at 27 per every 100,000 live births.
