Train controlling officer hit to death by locomotive in Lilongwe
What started as a normal operation at Kanengo Railway Station ended in tragedy when a locomotive hit to death the Station Master following a communication breakdown between him and the locomotive’s driver.
Spokesperson for Kanengo police salomy zgambo said Vincent Akim 26 years old from MCHINJI was crushed in the waist by the train as there wireless system was not working properly.
Fire has burnt to death a 45 year old man in Blantyre after his grass thatched house caught fire onTuesday.
Blantyre Police Public Relations Officer Augustus Nkhwazi said the deceased John Masambawa was staying alone in his house in Chilomoni Township.
Nkhwazi said the house caught fire around 1 am.
“People tried to put out the fierce fire in order to rescue the occupant only to find him severely bunt. They rushed him to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) for treatment but upon arrival he was pronounced dead,” he said.

Chikwawa police has recorded a 57 percent increase in road accidents in the first three months of the year 2018 as compared to those registered during the same period last year.
According to a report signed by Chikwawa Police Station, Officer In-charge, Assistant Commissioner, Davie Chingwalu, first quarter of 2018 registered seven accidents with six lives lost while in 2017 during the same period three accidents were registered with losses of two lives.
‘‘Most of these accidents occurred as a result of careless driving, drink and drive syndrome, or mechanical faults,’’ reads the report.
Meanwhile, the station’s Crime Unit has recorded a decrease in crime rate by 36.4 percent as presented in the first quarter.
‘‘During the period of January to March, 2017, the district recorded 489 criminal cases, and in the same period of 2018 the district registered 311 criminal cases which represents a 36.4 decline. ‘The number of house breaking cases between January and March decreased from 113 in 2017 to 88 in 2018, representing 51 percent decrease. Theft of livestock decreased from 56 to 43 representing 23 percent decline, assault cases decreased from 74 to 60 representing 19 percent.
“General theft decreased from 150 to 69, representing 54 percent, and sexual offences decreased from 18 to 17, representing six percent,’’ reads the report.
Despite the decrease in crime there was also some increase in murder and robbery cases in the district.
‘‘We have recorded an increase in murder and robbery cases in January – March 2018 compared to same period in 2017. Murder cases have increased from two to eight representing 75 percent increase while robberies have increased from six to eight, representing 25 percent,’’ the report reads
One person has died in a road accident after the vehicle he was traveling in swerved off the road and plunged into the river in Phalombe on Friday night.
Phalombe Police Publicist Constable Innocent Moses has identified the victim as Affick Kennedy Magamba.
According to Moses, the vehicle registration number BS 7267 loaded with ESCOM transformers and other equipment overturned at Naminjiwa Trading Centre around midnight and was heading to Migowi from Phalombe.
